In 1999 Ernst Strobl, now head of R&D at U-Turn, designed the classic AiREA Raptor II. One of the most user friendly race kites, it also had the performance to match, winning both UK and German buggy championships. Six years of further experience and innovation in paraglider and kite design have gone into the development of the U-Turn Butane.

The Butane is set to become the ultimate 'do-anything' kite for the experienced flyer. The buggy race pedigree is obvious, but now along with the performance there is stability never before seen in a modern race kite. If you race for the fun of it, or are looking to kickstart your racing career, then the Butane is ideal

However, thanks to the AFS system developed by Strobl to revolutionise safety in paragliders, the Butane is much more than a race kite. The excellent stability makes it Ideal for freestyle sports, with buggy or board, with handles or a bar

Like all U-Turn kites the Butane is designed to be easily converted for use as a depowerable kite. The Firewire bridle is arranged for easy fitting of the U-Turn SPS Speed/Power System, and the water repellent Aqua Ripstop fabric is a bonus when you fly on snow or wet beaches

Even if you don't have wheels the predictable, smooth and floaty lift makes for an excellent jumping machine, luffing on landing is rare thanks to the inbuilt stabilty

U-Turn Butane
AFS System
Automatic Flight Stabilisation

The Butane is the first kite from U-Turn to feature the new AFS system

AFS works like the electronic safety programs used in the automotive industry, like traction control and anti-lock brakes, you could call it "ESP for the air"

Working in the background to improve passive stability, AFS isn't a gadget that you can see, it's built into the cut and construction of the sail at the factory

Tips and Tricks

The Butane powers up very well on the brakes, letting the brakes off when overpowered on a reach is like dropping a kite size, just like depower.

Less experienced flyers can trim the brakes quite tight so that a crease can be seen on the undersurface near the trailing edge. This improves the passive stability further, but will reduce the full power range of the kite and if you overdo it the kite can stall out or spin too easily. It is best to learn to fly actively and apply brake only as necessary

The set-up of a kite is a very much down to personal preference and you should experiment to find the settings and techniques that suit you. Please contact us if you need more help and advice, or have any tips of your own to share
